The first Swadesh Darshan Project to boost tourism was opened by CM Conrad Sangma.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma inaugurated the Lake View Cottages and Orchid Lake Cottages near the panoramic Umiam Lake under the Swadesh Darshan Project of the Ministry of Tourism on Wednesday.

The project,“Development of North East Circuit: Umiam (Lake View) – U Lum Sohpetbneng- Mawdiangdiang – Orchid Lake Resort”, is the first Swadesh Darshan Project in Meghalaya.

Swadesh Darshan Project In Meghalaya

The Ministry of Tourism had sanctioned the project “Development of North East Circuit: Umiam (Lake View) – U Lum Sohpetbneng- Mawdiangdiang – Orchid Lake Resort” in July 2016 for Rs. 99.13 Crore.

According to an official statement, the department has developed facilities like traditional healing centre, tribal rejuvenation centre, tourist information centre, multipurpose hall, water sports, huts and cafeteria, trekking and cycling routes, last-mile connectivity, caravan parking, public toilets and solid waste management.

Conrad Sangma stated that the government wants to build a positive campaign to promote the destinations in Meghalaya and invite tourists to experience the culture, traditions, music, nature and the climate of the state.

The Ministry of Tourism has taken several initiatives for the growth of domestic and international tourism in the region.

Of the many challenges, the absence of quality infrastructure, services and awareness about the tourism opportunities in the area is a major concern.

The ministry has given an impetus to the tourism infrastructure in the region under its flagship schemes of Swadesh Darshan and Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spirituality Augmentation Drive (PRASAD), the statement said.

It has sanctioned 16 projects for Rs. 1349.04 crore covering all North-Eastern states under the schemes. As a result, the foreign tourist arrivals in the region have shown an upward trend over the years.

The Swadesh Darshan scheme is one of the flagship schemes of the Ministry of Tourism for development of thematic circuits in the country in a planned and prioritised manner.

Under the scheme, the government focuses on the development of quality infrastructure in the country for providing better experience and facilities to the visitors. Apart from this, the scheme also aims to foster the economic growth of the nation.

The department has sanctioned 74 projects till now. Of these, 30 projects are expected to be completed this year.
