Iconic Makeover For Incredible India: Work Begins On Upgrading Tourist Sites

Improving infrastructure and attracting private investment are key features of the project.

The Incredible India experience is set to become even better with the government taking steps to develop 10 prominent tourist sites across the country into Iconic Tourism Destinations.

Announcing the proposal in the Budget speech on 1 February, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had said that the approach would involve infrastructure and skill development; development of technology; attracting private investment; branding, and marketing.

While the Finance Minister had not mentioned the names of these sites in his speech, Minister of State for Culture Dr Mahesh Sharma gave details at a media briefing on Tuesday.

The Incredible India Makeover

The Ellora Caves in Maharashtra are part of the iconic destinations.

Here is the full list of the iconic tourism destinations, which will add to the effectiveness of the Incredible India campaign.

  • Taj Mahal and Fatehpur Sikri, Agra (U.P)
  • Ajanta and Ellora Caves, Aurangabad (Maharashtra)
  • Red Fort, Humayun’s Tomb, Qutb Minar and Purana Qila (all in Delhi)
  • Khajuraho group of temples (Madhya Pradesh)
  • Hampi group of monuments (Karnataka)
  • Shore Temple, Mahabalipuram (Tamil Nadu)
  • Sun Temple, Konark (Odisha)
  • Golkonda Fort, Hyderabad (Telangana)

According to the minister, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) had already started working towards conservation and providing world class amenities in 10 monuments. Proposals for design amenities for two of the monuments, Ajanta and Ellora Caves, and Golkonda Fort, would be cleared by March, Dr Sharma said.

The project includes cleanliness within and around the monument; making monuments and their buffers polythene free: improved connectivity and access, and using technology for more effective dissemination of information.

The project at Taj Mahal includes the development of greenery in the Taj Corridor area between Taj Mahal and Agra Fort and night viewing from Mehtab Bagh.

Here’s what Incredible India had to say about the monument on Twitter.

For Delhi’s Red Fort, there are plans to refurbish the British style barracks to house museums and exhibitions in addition to conservation of monuments in the complex.

The Konark Sun Temple in Odisha and Khajuraho will see landscaping and signage in addition to other amenities, said Dr Sharma while giving details of the project.

The Sun Temple, incidentally, features in the new 10 rupee currency notes.
