New Mumbai And Pune Metro Corridors To Boost Urban Connectivity

Mumbai will get two more Metro lines; the one in Pune will be the city’s third.

Prime Minister, Narendra Modi is laying the foundation stone of Mumbai and Pune metro corridors in Maharashtra on Tuesday.

As a part of infrastructure and housing projects worth Rs. 41,000 crore, the PM is launching the Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan Metro (Mumbai’s metro line 5) and the Dahisar-Mira-Bhayander Metro (metro-9) at Kalyan in Thane district.

Narendra Modi will then proceed to Pune to launch Pune Metro Phase-3 between Hinjewadi and Shivajinagar.

Once completed, Mumbai and Pune metro corridors would ease the system of transportation in these cities.

Mumbai And Pune Metro Corridors

The 24.9 km long Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan Metro will incur an expenditure of approximately Rs. 8,416 crore and is expected to be completed by 2021.

It will carry around 2.29 lakh passengers every day. The six-coach train system will consist of seven stations.

The second project in Mumbai, Dahisar-Mira-Bhayander Metro, will be elevated at 10.3 km and will be in operation by 2022. The cost of the project comprising of eight stations, is estimated to be Rs. 6,607 crore.

The two Mumbai projects are being executed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

Integration of the Mumbai metro-9 will be done with metro-7 (Dahisar to Andheri), metro-2A (Dahisar and DN Road) and the metro-10 (Gaimukh-Shivaji Chowk, Mira Road).

 On the other hand, Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) will implement the Pune metro corridor project on a public-private partnership basis.

The third metro line in Pune will be 23-km long, connecting Hinjewadi and Shivajinagar. It will cost Rs. 8,313-crore.

Modi’s Maharashtra Visit

During his visit to Maharashtra, PM Modi addressed the ‘Republic’ Summit, organized by Republic TV, in Mumbai.

He also released a book, “Timeless Laxman”, based on cartoonist RK Laxman at Raj Bhavan.

Under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, PM Modi is launching the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra’s (CIDCO) mass housing scheme. The Rs 18,000 crore worth scheme will offer around 89,771 affordable homes.

Apart from this, 90,000 units are being launched under the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) and Low Income Groups (LIG) housing scheme.

After addressing the gathering in Pune, he will leave for Delhi.
