Swachhata Hi Seva: A Campaign For A Cleaner, Healthier India

PM Narendra Modi will launch the campaign on 15 September.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced the launch of ‘Swachhata Hi Seva Movement’ (Cleanliness Is Service) from 15 September to 2 October 2018.  The initiative marks 4 years of “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan”.

The “Swachhata Hi Seva Movement” is a nation-wide fortnight-long sanitation programme which seeks to mobilize people to come out and get directly involved with the government’s flagship cleanliness initiative “Swachh Bharat Mission” by offering shramdaan for swachhata, a PIB statement said.

Prime Minister Modi has called upon everyone to participate in this movement and support the Swachh Bharat movement. It was launched in 2014 with an aim to make a clean and Open Defecation Free (ODF) India by 2 October 2019, the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

On 15 September last year, President Ram Nath Kovind had launched the Swachhata Hi Seva campaign at Iswarganj village in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. He pledged to create a clean, healthy and new India through the campaign.

Cleanliness is not the responsibility of only sanitation personnel and government departments; it is a multi-stakeholder national movement.

Swachh Bharat Mission- A Flashback

Prime Minister Narendra Modi picked up a broom on Gandhi Jayanti on 2 October 2014 to launch the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

The main objective of this movement is the construction of toilets in the rural areas and sustained use by all household eliminating open-defecation and manual scavenging systems.

This will promote improved hygiene behaviour among the people. Further, solid and liquid waste management projects are being executed to achieve cleanliness and ensure proper sanitation.

Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan was nominated as the Brand Ambassador for the Swachh Bharat Mission.

Prominent personalities like Akshay Kumar and Sachin Tendulkar have also extended support to the mission to motivate more people to join.

Last year, Sachin Tendulkar cleaned suburban Bandra with a broom to encourage people to keep their surroundings clean. The Akshay Kumar-starrer “Toilet – Ek Prem Katha” was themed on the Swachh Bharat Mission.

The government conducts an annual cleanliness survey, the Swachh Survekshan, to rank the cleanest cities and states in the country. Indore in Madhya Pradesh has been ranked at no 1 in the latest such survey.
