Visually Impaired Friendly Coins: Know About The New Series Unveiled By Govt

The new series of coins was released by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The government unveiled a new series of visually impaired friendly coins on Thursday. The coins are in denominations of Rs.1, Rs.2, Rs.5, Rs.10 and the newly-included Rs.20.

The Visually Impaired Friendly Coins

The size and weight of the new series of visually impaired friendly coins increases from lower to higher denominations. This will help in their identification by touch and feel.

All the denominations except the coin of Rs 20 will be of round shape.

The new coins have been designed by the National Institute of Design (NID).

Features of The New Rs. 20 Coin

The newly included coin of Rs.20 will be a 12-sided one with no serrations.

The face of the coin will bear the Lion Capital of the Ashoka Pillar. Below the pillar, ‘Satyamev Jayate’ will be inscribed in Hindi.

On the left periphery, the coin will be flanked with the word ‘Bharat’ in Hindi; ‘INDIA’ in English will appear on the right periphery.

At the back of the coin, it will bear denominational value ‘20’ in the international numerals with the Rupee symbol above it.

On the left will be the design of grains depicting the agricultural dominance of the country.

The top right and bottom right peripheries shall bear the word ‘Bees Rupaye’ in Hindi and ‘TWENTY RUPEES’ in English.

The year of minting in international numerals shall be shown in the centre of the left periphery of the coin.

With 27 mm as its radius, the coin will weigh 8.54 grams. The outer ring will be formed of Nickel Silver (Copper: 65%, Zinc: 15%, Nickel: 20%) while the inner part will be of Nickel Brass (Copper: 75%, Zinc: 20%, Nickel: 05%).

The Release Ceremony

The coins were released by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a ceremony in New Delhi. Visually impaired children had been invited for the event. PM Modi expressed happiness in hosting them and thanked them for giving him an opportunity to interact with them.

Union Minister for Finance, Arun Jaitley and Minister of State for Finance, Pon Radhakrishnan were also present.

Facilitating The Visually Impaired

The government had designed and released the new series of visually impaired friendly coins with the vision of reaching the last mile and the last person, PM Modi said.

He further stated that the new circulation coins with various differentiating features will aid the visually impaired in a great manner.

The new series of coins will facilitate the visually impaired, and will instill them with confidence.

Apart from this, he also mentioned about the various initiatives taken by the Government for the welfare of the Divyang community.
