With Her, To Skill And Empower, On International Day Of The Girl Child

The UN is working towards making 1 billion people enter the workforce in the next 10 years.

The International Day of the Girl Child is observed on 11 October every year with an aim to promote empowerment and rights of every girl child in the world. The day also highlights the challenges that girls face globally.

With the theme for 2018 as “With Her: A Skilled Girl Force”, global campaign have begun worldwide emphasising upon the skill development of the girl children and upgrading their roles in commercial world with improved employability.

This year, the theme gains importance as United Nations has decided to work towards making 1 billion young people enter the workforce in the next 10 years. Over 90% people living in developing countries work in the informal sector with low or no pay, abuse and exploitation.

For the goal accomplishment, the United Nations has initiated the “global community to rethink how to prepare them (girl children) for a successful transition into the world of work”.

The theme for the last year was “EmPower Girls: Before, During and After Crisis” and in 2016, it was “Girls Progress = Goals Progress: What Counts For Girls”.

International Day Of The Girl Child 2018

On Thursday, young women took over as ambassadors of foreign countries for the day to celebrate the International Day of the Girl Child 2018. Plan International has organised the event. It is a humanitarian organisation which works for child rights and promotes gender equality.

Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor and European Union (EU) Ambassador to India Tomasz Kozlowski were the chief guests for the event.

These young leaders have been selected due to their leadership qualities. The girls took up the role of ambassadors of various countries such as Denmark, United States, Belgium and Canada.

Nineteen-year old Pari from a village in Uttarakhand was the Australian ambassador for the day where she addressed an all-staff meeting at the High Commission speaking about her personal priorities in women’s health and public safety. She also spoke to students of Katha School about what the International Day of the Girl Child means to her.

Shalini from Uttar Pradesh and Subhalaxmi from Odisha were invited by the Delegation of the European Union to India on the occasion of the International Day of the Girl Child 2018.

Other foreign embassies which invited young female ambassadors for today included the countries like Finland, Slovenia and Sweden.

International Day Of The Girl Child

United Nations general assembly launched the day in 2012 to focus on the issues like equality, education, child marriage, safety, health and violence.

The Day of The Girl Summit is held at United Nations headquarters every year where organisations come together to aware, educate and serve girls to further the advancement of their human rights.
