India have ended with a rich haul of 19 medals, including seven gold, in the 2018 Asian Games athletics events. This included two gold medals and two bronze medals on the last day of the track and field competitions at the Jakarta Palembang Games on Thursday.
The team of Hima Das, Poovamma Raju, Vismaya Koroth and Saritaben Gayakwad proved too good for the rest as they won the fifth consecutive Asian Games gold medal for India in the Women’s 4x400m relay. Jinson Johnson won the gold medal in the Men’s 1500m event.
Track And Field Gold Medals
This is the third time that India have won seven gold medals in Asian Games athletics. The last two times were at the 1978 Bangkok Games and the 2002 Busan Games.
It had won only two gold medals at the 2014 Incheon Games. India’s best performance in athletics had come in the inaugural 1951 Asian Games held in Delhi, where it won 10 gold medals.

Hima Das, Poovamma Raju, Vismaya Koroth and Saritaben Gayakwad – Women’s 4x400m relay. India have been winning the gold medal in this event since 2002.
Jinson Johnson – Men’s 1500m. This was his second medal after a silver in the Men’s 800m.
Arpinder Singh – Men’s Triple jump. India’s last gold medal in this discipline had come in 1970.
Swapna Barman – Women’s Heptathlon. This was India’s first Asian Games gold medal in the event.
Manjit Singh – Men’s 800m. This was India’s sixth 800m gold medal at the Asian Games.
Tajinderpal Singh Toor – Men’s shot put. He achieved a distance of 20.75m to create a new Games record.
Neeraj Chopra – Men’s Javelin throw. Chopra came up with a personal best of 88.06m to win India’s first Asian Games gold medal in this event.
