A Member Of Parliament (MP), mother of three and the most successful boxer in the history of women’s boxing. That’s MC Mary Kom for you!
The ongoing Women’s World Boxing Championship in Delhi was all about her even before the tournament began; Mary Kom has lived up to the hype that was created around her.
She is on course for a record sixth World Championship gold medal, winning her semi-final bout against North Korea’s Kim Hyang Mi on Thursday evening. The 35-year-old Manipuri beat her opponent by a 5-0 verdict.
On Tuesday, she had punched her way into the semi-finals of the light flyweight 48kg category defeating China’s Wu Yu 5-0, assuring herself of at least a bronze medal.
But the champions that she is, nothing short of a shot at gold would have satisfied her.
This will be her first world championship medal since she won gold in 2010, and will make her the most successful boxer in the history of the tournament.
The five-time world champion has also won a silver medal at the Women’s World Boxing Championship. The medal that she is already assured of will take her total tally to seven.
Before the New Delhi meet, the Manipuri boxing champion was tied with Irish legend Katie Taylor on the number of World Championship medals won at six each. Taylor had won five gold medals and a bronze medal before she turned professional.
