Ace Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar is on the comeback trail after a long lay-off due to a serious career-threatening knee injury and subsequent surgery. She won the gold medal in the vault event at the FIG World Challenge Cup in Mersin, Turkey, on Sunday.
Dipa finished with a score of 14.150 to win her first gold medal in a World Challenge Cup. This was her first appearance at a major tournament after the 2016 Rio Olympics, where she missed the bronze medal by a whisker.

Injury After Rio Olympics
Dipa Karmakar was out of action due to a leg injury after her impressive performance at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where she nearly won a bronze medal after stunning the world with her performance on the Produnova vault.
Named after Russian champion gymnast Elena Produnova, this is known as the “vault of death” due to the dangerous moves it involves. Reports, however, suggest that it could be some time before Karmakar attempts the Produnova vault again as she has just returned from the knee injury.
The injury had necessitated an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) reconstruction, described as a difficult surgical procedure.
