Historic Test Debut By Afghanistan As They Take On India

Yamin Ahmadzai became the first Aghan bowler to take a wicket in a Test match.

It was a historic Test debut by Afghanistan as the one-off match against India began at Bengaluru on Thursday. It has now become the 12thTest playing nation.

The historic Test debut by Afghanistan had several firsts on the first day of the match itself. Fast bowler Yamin Ahmadzai became the first Aghan bowler to take a wicket in a Test match.

India opener Shikhar Dhawan added his name to the record books by becoming only the sixth batsman to score a century before lunch on the opening day of a Test match. Dhawan, who scored his seventh Test hundred, is the first Indian batsman to do so.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a special message on the historic Test debut by Afghanistan.

He pointed out that the young and talented team had made great strides in a very short period of time. “These achievements have come about in challenging and difficult circumstances,” he added. Here is the Prime Minister’s message shared by the Indian Embassy in Kabul.

Former Indian all-rounder Salim Durrani (83) was a special guest for this special day. The dashing former Indian cricketer shares a special bond with Afghanistan as he was born in the country’s capital, Kabul.

The announcement about Afghanistan’s maiden Test match came in January.

International Cricket Council (ICC) CEO Dave Richardson and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) presented a memento to Afghanistan captain Asghar Stanikzai.

Afghanistan’s Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah was welcomed by Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore. The two then greeted members of the two teams.

Later, Rathore, who is India’s first individual silver medal winner at the Olympics, could not resist the urge to have a swing with Shikhar Dhawan’s bat!

Young leg-spinner Rashid Khan has already created waves at the T20 and One Day International levels, picking up wickets regularly against some top teams.
