India U-19 World Cup Champions For Record 4th Time, Crush Australia By 8 Wickets

India completed a dream run by remaining undefeated in the tournament.

India came up with superlative performance with both bat and ball to become the 2018 U-19 World Cup Champions defeating Australia by eight wickets in the finals on Saturday.

Bowling first, the Indian bowlers restricted Australia to 216 all out in 47.2 overs. They then cruised to 220-2 in 38.5 overs, powered by a superb century by Manjot Kalra (101* off 101 balls). The opener’s classy knock included eight fours and three sixes.

Chasing a target of 217, Kalra and captain Prithvi Shaw put on 71 runs for the opening stand. He was then part of a 60-run partnership for the second wicket with Shubman Gill. India then cruised to the target with over 12 overs to spare.

It was a beaming Rahul Dravid, former Test captain and U-19 coach, who applauded the victory the moment the winning runs were scored. Celebrations followed the moment Prithvi Shaw received the ICC U-19 World Cup trophy.

Indian Test and One Day International captain Virat Kohli, under whose leadership India became the U-19 Cricket World Cup champions in 2008, had this to say on Twitter.

Here is how the official Twitter handle of the Cricket World Cup celebrated India’s victory.

Accurate Bowling Throughout

Earlier in the day, some accurate bowling meant that Australia were not able to consolidate on a decent beginning after a solid knock of 76 by Jonathan Merlo. This was after pacer Ishan Porel (2-30) got rid of both the Australian openers, Max Bryant (14) and Jack Edwards (28) on a pitch were strokeplay was not very easy.

Kamlesh Nagarkoti (2-41) then removed Australian captain Jason Sangha for 13, with a moving ball that was edged to the wicket-keeper.

At one stage, Australia were 183-4 and looked set for a competitive score of 250-plus. But the spin duo of Anukul Roy (2-32) and Shiva Singh (2-36) managed to restrict the scoring before the pacers came back to polish off the tail. Fast bowler Shivam Mavi was also among the wickets (1-46) while an accurate throw from the deep by Shiva Singh had Baxter Bolt run out for 13.

Unbeaten Run By U-19 World Cup Champions

India remained unbeaten in the tournament, having started their campaign with a convincing win against Australia in the group stage. This was followed by comfortable victories against Papua New Gunea, Zimbabwe and Bangladesh to set up a semi-final clash with arch-rivals Pakistan.

The match itself was a bit of an anti-climax after the build-up, with India thrashing Pakistan by 203 runs.
