Khelo India School Games Day 2: Karnataka’s Memorable Gold Rush In Swimming

Swimmers from Karnataka have won six gold medals and three bronze medals so far.

Young sportspersons continued to celebrate with some memorable wins on Khelo India School Games Day 2 on Thursday. The day’s events included swimming, athletics, football and hockey.

In swimming, participants from Karnataka have made a virtual sweep so far, with a gold rush of six medals and three bronze wins.

The winners from the state were: Mohit Venkatesh (Gold, 400 m Freestyle, Boys) Saif Chandan Ali KS (Bronze, 400 m Freestyle, Boys); Srihari Nataraj (Gold, 100 m Back Stroke, Boys); Srihari Nataraj, Saif Chandan Ali KS, Aditya Bopanna and Prasidha Krishna (Gold, 4×100 m Freestyle Relay, Boys); Khushi Dinesh (Gold, 400 m Freestyle, Girls); Poojitha J Murthy (Bronze, 100 m Butterfly and 400 m Freestyle, Girls); Suvana C Bhaskar (Gold, 100 m Back Stroke, Girls), and Saloni Dalal (Gold, 200 m Breast Stroke, Girls).

Keen Contest In Athletics

Punjab’s Chanveer Kaur won the gold medal in the girls’ athletics 200 m discipline on Khelo India School Games Day 2. The silver medal went to Ancy Sojan E of Kerala while Tamil Nadu’s M. Santra Teresa Martin won the bronze medal.

The girls’ athletics events also saw Haryana’s Jyoti win the gold medal for Javelin Throw with a distance of 40.59 m. Delhi’s Auhona Roy won silver with a throw of 39.9 m. The bronze medal went to Jashanpreet Kaur of Punjab who recorded a distance of 37.10 m.

And these were the winners in Pole Vault, Girls.

Big Build-Up For Khelo India School Games

The event had seen a massive build-up over the past few weeks, including the launch of the logo and anthem in January.

Sporting icons like wrestlers Sushil Kumar and Satpal; ace footballer Bhaichung Bhutia; star badminton players PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth along with top coach P Gopichand; veteran athlete PT Usha and gymnast Deepa Karmakar were among those who attended the opening ceremony at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium.

The Khelo India School Games, which has 199 gold, 199 silver and 275 bronze medals at stake, is being held at different venues across Delhi from 31 January to 8 February. There are over 3,000 participants from all the states and Union Territories.

School Games Day 2 Medals Tally

Speaking at the inauguration of the event on Wednesday, Prime Minister Modi had said that it was not just about more medals, “but more playing”.

On the opening day on Wednesday, Uttarakhand’s Anu Kumar won the meet’s first gold medal by finishing first in 1500 m (Boys). Tamil Nadu had taken the lead in the medals tally on Day 1, with two gold medals, followed by Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala and Haryana with one gold each.

But Karnataka’s gold rush on Khelo India School Games Day 2 placed them firmly at the top of the table on Day 2, with seven gold medals and three bronze medals. Tamil Nadu was at second place with three gold, four silver and five bronze medals. In third place was Haryana, with three gold, three silver and two bronze medals.
