Mega Sports Meet Khelo India School Games Opened By PM Narendra Modi

The Khelo India School Games has 199 gold, 199 silver and 275 bronze medals at stake.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Khelo India School Games at Indira Gandhi Indore Stadium in New Delhi on Wednesday. The mega sports event is part of the Khelo India programme that aims to structure the nation as a ‘great sporting nation’ by revolutionalising every sport played in India at the grass-root level.

The Khelo India School Games, which has 199 gold, 199 silver and 275 bronze medals at stake, is being held from 31 January to 8 February. The event will see over 3,000 participants from all the states and Union Territories.

Speaking at the inauguration of the event, Prime Minister Modi said that it was not just about more medals, “but more playing”.

The impressive opening ceremony saw some spectacular performances.

Sportspersons gathered at the venue also took the Khelo India pledge. It involved promising to make playing sports and teaching others to play an integral part of one’s lives. The pledge is also to do with creating a healthy and New India.

The event is the brainchild of Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Rajyavardhan Rathore. Here is what he had to say on the day the games began.

The Khelo India School Games, organised in collaboration with SGFI and the National sports federations, is being broadcast by Star Sports and Doordarshan.  Scheduled at venues across New Delhi, thousands of athletes from all over the country are participating in the event. Under-17 athletes across 16 disciplines, including archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, football and many more are participating in these games.

The games have witnessed a huge build-up ranging from an anthem to a logo. Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Rathore, along with the Sanjay Gupta, Managing Director, Star India unveiled the Khelo India Anthem on 15 January. The Khelo India anthem has been composed by Louis Banks. Rathore launched the Khelo India logo at the Nehru Stadium on 6 January. The logo has been designed by Ogilvy India. He said that he was delighted that many chose the colours of the national flag for the logo design that had been crowd-sourced.

A new Pan-Indian Sports Scholarship scheme, which would cover 1,000 most talented young athletes each year across selected sport disciplines, will be introduced.

One of the key objectives of the Khelo India School Games is to “bridge the gap between potential and podium for the 2024  Olympics”. Here is what Doordarshan Sports said on Twitter.

The ambitious programme aims to cover about 20 crore children in the age group of 10 to 18 in a national physical fitness drive and support them suitably to achieve the target. Participants will be identified in priority sports disciplines by a High-Powered Committee. They will also be provided with an annual financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh for eight years.
