PV Sindhu Wins Historic Asian Games Badminton Silver Medal

India also won their first-ever Asian Games bronze medal in table tennis.

She may have been outplayed for the gold medal but PV Sindhu has created history by becoming the first Indian to win an Asian Games badminton silver medal.

Taking on world no.1 Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei, Sindhu lost 13-21, 16-21 in the women’s singles badminton final at the 2018 Jakarta Palembang Asian Games on Tuesday.

But she etched her name firmly in the record books. No Indian before her had made it to the finals of an Asian Games badminton event; Saina Nehwal had equalled Syed Modi’s feat at the 1982 Asian Games by winning the bronze medal on Monday.

PV Sindu’s Asian Games badminton silver medal ensured a 2-3 podium finish for India in the women’s singles category. This is the country’s best ever performance in Asian Games badminton history.

The Indian had defeated world no.2 Akane Yamaguchi of Japan 21-17, 15-21, 21-10 in the semi-final. Nehwal had lost her match to Tai Tzu Ying 17-21, 14-21.
